Byte switchboard
Eight switches, one byte: flip the bits and watch the number appear as a sum of place values, in binary, decimal and hexadecimal, and as a character.
What you will learn
With this demo you flip the eight bits of a byte yourself, and afterwards you can:
- find the value of a byte as the sum of the place values of the bits that are on
- read the same byte in binary, decimal and hexadecimal and as a character
- find the switch settings for a given decimal number, hex number or character
- predict which switch changes the number the most
Goal: See how eight bits make a number. It is the sum of the place values of the switches that are on, and the same byte appears in binary, decimal, hexadecimal and as a character.
How to use: Click a switch to flip it, or drag across several. +1 and −1 count, and under decimal, hex and text you can type a value that the switches follow. The byte starts at 65, the capital A.
