Audio digitiser

The same two cuts for a sound: you choose the sampling rate and the bit depth, see the staircase over the wave and hear what gets lost on the way.

Topics:Representing informationTransferring information

Part of the lesson Analog and digital

Goal: Hear what the two cuts of digitising make of a sound. The sampling rate sets how often per second the sound is measured, the bit depth to how many loudness levels every measurement is rounded; the drawing shows the staircase that comes out of it, and below it you see what the recording costs.

How to use: Pick a sound at the top, set the sampling rate with the slider and the bit depth below it, and compare the original with your digital version using the buttons, best with headphones. You hear the cuts most clearly at 2,000 Hz or at 2 bits.
