Photo digitiser

A photo turns into numbers: you choose how many points and how many colours it keeps, watch the picture get coarser and pay for every point and every colour in bits.

Topics:Representing informationTransferring information

Part of the lesson Analog and digital

Goal: See what the two cuts of digitising make of a photo. The resolution sets at how many points the picture is measured, the colour depth to how many colours every point is rounded, and below the pictures you see what the result costs in bytes and in transmission time.

How to use: Pick a picture at the top, set the resolution with the slider, from 256 × 256 points down to a single one, and choose the colour depth below it. Point at a spot of the digital picture to see its bits and the place in the original it came from.
